The Lies of Food Bloggers

On Blog Photography

Food bloggers makes posting appear effortless. They create the illusion that they snapped a picture of the sausage ragu from dinner last night, and shared the recipe with us the next day. Lies! Lies! All lies! They didn’t have it for dinner. They had ragu for breakfast! How dare I make such bold allegations?

My Cooking Routine

I am a night time cook. I enjoy the brisk walk to the market early Saturday morning. After finishing up with shopping and cleaning, I spend my afternoon out with friends. I leave cooking to the evening hour. This routine makes sense -especially in the summer time when the kitchen is even hotter in the day. I noticed a problem with this cooking schedule at the start of “Restaurant Baby.”

Top: Night time picture of dried citrus peels and licorice root used for marinating turkey. Bottom: Day time picture.

The pictures were reason enough to adjust my schedule to morning cooking. Although I have followed many food blogs, I never thought twice on how bloggers capture the deliciousness. I admit, not all food bloggers cook in the morning. They may be in sunnier regions or simply have great kitchen lighting, but regardless we consider lighting.

I shared my finding in the “Start Your Own Food Blog” class at the Institute of Culinary Education. Brooke Parkhurst, the facilitator, shared that she takes the food to the baby’s nursery (the room with the best lighting) and puts it on the radiator by the window for the photo shoot. I’m working on making my photographs even tastier. What are your tips and tricks for taking scrumptious photos?

It’s a one time class awhile ago. Ga got me a certificate to the ICE for my b-day.

Yes – I took pictures on my desk with the desk lamp lighting also. It still didn’t come out as nice. I would post a picture of an example of that.
